Which ERP to Choose for a Manufacturing SME
An ERP for manufacturing is a different purchase than an ERP for trade. What matters is production planning, bill of materials (BOM), batch tracking and linking an order to its cost. Below are the criteria that separate a true manufacturing fit from a generic package.
TL;DR
For manufacturing, check not the feature list but whether the system mirrors your real flow: from order, through BOM and production order, to cost and warehouse. Start by mapping one product.
Manufacturing has different requirements than trade
In trade you buy and sell the same goods. In manufacturing a product is created from raw materials and components, and the system must mirror this: product structure, material consumption, labour time, unit cost. An ERP that handles distribution brilliantly can be useless in production. We covered the industry context for manufacturing separately: /dla-branzy/produkcja.
What a manufacturing ERP must have
The minimum set, without which production stays in Excel next to the ERP instead of inside it.
- Bill of materials (BOM) with variants and versions
- Production orders linked to the customer order
- Material planning and reservation per order
- Batch and serial number tracking for traceability and complaints
- Actual production cost versus planned cost
Trap: buying an oversized system
A 30-person company does not need a full MES scheduling machines to the minute. A large manufacturing system gives a sense of safety, but implementation takes a year and most modules stay empty. Match the scope to real complexity - better to add a module in a year than to sink the project in features nobody uses.
Trap: production separate from finance
If a production order does not automatically tie to the warehouse and cost, you get nice production reports and separate accounting that cannot see them. The most value comes from the link: the order draws material from stock, adds labour and shows margin on the product. Without that, an ERP in manufacturing is just a register.
How to compare candidates
Take one real product and run it through each system in a demo: order, BOM, production order, material consumption, cost, invoice. A system that does this without workarounds and without Excel is a candidate. Head-to-head comparisons with popular systems in Poland also help: /open-mercato-vs-enova365 and /open-mercato-vs-comarch-erp-optima.
